CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
This event is a highlight of the Irish calendar and is only open to existing champions of IIBA
licensed tournaments. The added bonus for the players is that in addition to being declared top
dogs in their event, they also go on to represent Ireland in the World Championships. As the
Worlds are held every two years the Champion of champions for two seasons are invited into the
Irish team. The next World event is in March 2002, so the 2000 & 2001 winners will be invited.
The Champion of Champions event was staged at the Antrim Forum. The cups and prizes were
presented by Mrs Nora Johnston, wife of the IIBA Competition Secretary. A written report follows
the photographs.
McMENEMY & CAMPBELL TAKE THE PAIRS
Peter McMenemy and Keiran Campbell took the pairs title for St Patrick’s with an 11 - 6 win over
Barry Kane & Tommy Mullin of Dunluce Parish. The St Patrick’s duo started off in a storm, taking
a four off the very first end and were 7 - 0 up after just three ends. Kane & Mullin tried hard
and took four shots of the next three ends whilst conceeding just a single but McMenemy &
Campbell eventually booked their World Championship place with an 11 - 6 victory.
WELLINGTON TRIO OUSTS THE CHAMPIONS
Last years winning Killyclogher triple of Patrick Conroy, Matt McLean & Gerrard Conroy opened
with two shots on the first end but Wellington’s Norman Noble, Gary Burke & Trevor Scott struck
back with eleven shots over the next four ends for an 11 - 2 lead. The Killyclogher triple
replied with six shots in four ends whilst conceeding two but they ran out of ends and lost
9 - 15 to the triumphant Wellington triple. The only consolation for the Killyclogher players
was that they have a place in the World championships by virtue of last year’s win.
WELLINGTON FOURSOME FOR THE FOURS
An opening blast of seven shots in the first four ends laid the foundation of victory for David
Gilliand, Ian McIlroy, John McVitty and Harry Gawley. Mayne’s Adrian McFarland, Richard Killen,
Neville Hegan & Malcolm Cunningham clawed their way back to a 5 - 8 deficit but a couple of
singles for Wellington Quartet prevented any further inroads and gave them the title by 10 - 5.
